Young Peoples Sub-Committee The Young People's Sub-committee is a subcommittee of the Benevolence Committee. It arranges a traditional series of events for young people who are beneficiaries or associated with beneficiaries of the Charity. For example in 2010 six formal events were organised, together with funding of a family trip to the cinema where 3 beneficiaries were supervised by their parents. All activities have proved to be successful, enjoyable and educational for the children who attended. In 2010 events included 9 beneficiaries visiting the Chill Factory, Trafford Park and enjoying an introduction to Snowboarding and the Luge (small sledge), all on real snow. A party of 11 experienced 10 pin bowling at the Hollywood Bowl, Ashton and this proved to be another successful and flexible event with children and parents handling their own transport arrangements. On this occasion, the beneficiaries voted for refreshments at Frankie & Benny’s to round off the day. A group of 10 Beneficiaries with some parent/guardian and Committee support set off for London by train. They were entertained by Jim Dobbin MP who personally gave them a 2 hour conducted tour of the House of Commons, including both the Lords and Commons Chambers. They also watched the Speaker’s entrance procession to open the Chamber for Question Time, where they saw a debate between Ken Clarke and Jack Straw! Jim’s commentary described the wealth of history surrounding the buildings and also included some amusing stories about his many years as an MP. Later, the party experienced a cruise on the Thames and a trip on the London Eye before grabbing a snack meal at Nando’s Euston Station and the train home. Alton Towers again proved popular for 9 Beneficiaries supported by one parent and 2 Committee Members. Nearly 50 Beneficiaries young and old came together for a joint outing to the pantomime at Thwaites Empire Theatre, Blackburn where the cast had to suffer a cameo appearance from Dr Nigel Bramley-Howarth and Derek Thornhill!
