Hewlett Court Celebrates Birthday for James Campbell

21 September 2010

On Tuesday 21st September the staff and residents of Hewlett Court welcomed several notable visitors to help celebrate WBro James Campbell’s 100th birthday.

The home already has Mrs Bessie Driver, who achieved 100yrs on the 14th June this year, as a resident. They must be putting something in the tea!!

RW Provincial Grand Master, Jack Price, accompanied by his wife Dorothy, plus WBro Derek Thornhill APGM and the Civic Mayor of Bury, Councillor John Byrne, all greeted Bro Jim in fine style.  There were members of Jim’s own Lodge, (Alkington No. 6102) and several Grand Lodge Officers present, as befits such an auspicious occasion.

All the residents turned out in the Lounge, the Conservatory, and other public areas to support Jim and to enjoy the Champagne reception, followed by a splendid buffet served by the staff of the home, and ably prepared by Melanie and her kitchen crew.

Another welcome guest was WBro Jim’s sister who is herself 96 yrs old and now lives in South Wales.  She travelled North to share the day and was seated by his side for the whole afternoon.

After the presentation of an Illuminated scroll signed by the PGM recognising his Birthday, Jim sat amongst his friends, and glasses of wine and other suitable beverages were liberally consumed.  It was noted that one of his gifts, an expensive Malt Whisky was well short of the neck of the bottle before breakfast next morning !

A great day for all, and a special day for a respected gentleman and a Brother.

James Mitchell Campbell was born on 21 September 1910. Jim moved into Hewlett Court in July 2002 with his wife Jean; Jean sadly died in September 2005.

Both Jean and Jim were keen golfers and bridge players.  Jim was initiated into Alkrington Lodge, No. 6102, in March 1957.
